URGENT
Urban Regeneration and the Environment Programme
The vast majority of people in the UK work, live or visit urban places on a daily basis. Researchers are interested in urban areas because their soil, air, water quality and the natural ecology differ significantly from rural areas.
NERC's £10m urban research programme (1997-2005) was carried out to learn more about the urban environment. Universities, research institutes, local authorities, public agencies, government departments and industry worked in collaboration for over seven years. This has led to some substantial achievements which are highlighted in this brochure.
The programme primarily focused on urban areas in the West Midlands and South Wales, but the research outcomes are just as relevant to local authorities throughout the UK.
