Highlights from the Lowland Catchment Research programme (LOCAR)

Although there is a perception that water is plentiful in Britain, it is a scarce resource in some parts of the country. While water is a renewable resource, it is also finite. A growing population, with more households and greater wealth, means growing demand for water.

We must manage our water resources sustainably, so that the needs of people, industry and agriculture are balanced with the needs of the environment.

The EU Water Framework Directive requires the UK to maintain our rivers as healthy aquatic habitats. To meet this challenge the whole landscape needs to be managed in an integrated way - acknowledging that what happens in one part of a catchment will affect another.
