Flood Risk from Extreme Events (FREE)
FREE was a £7·8 million research programme that ran between 2007 and 2010, investing in science connected to improving our ability to predict, analyse and protect against the risk of extreme flooding.
The research carried out under FREE brought together scientists in disciplines ranging from meteorology, climate modelling and hydrology to earth science and coastal oceanography.
They worked alongside local and regional authorities, public bodies like the Environment Agency and Met Office, and the private sector.
This leaflet provides more information about the programme and its goals, as well as highlighting some of its achievements.
