NERC signs MoU with multinational energy company Shell
7 February 2014
NERC has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global energy company Shell.
The arrangement will enable Shell to use NERC's world-leading environmental science to help reduce the environmental impact of their operations and projects by providing access to independent, objective advice and information.
At the same time, it will help NERC fulfil its strategic goal to support economic growth and address societal challenges in the environment by funding the best research and ensuring it has the widest possible impact.
NERC-funded research produces a wealth of data, knowledge, tools and expertise. A central part of NERC's remit is to work with businesses, policy-makers and third-sector organisations to help them make use of these environmental research outcomes.
The MoU details how Shell and NERC will work together to understand the challenges each faces and identify where research may be able to contribute.
Collaborating with Shell in this way will benefit NERC in a number of ways, such as helping to identify opportunities for joint funding and postgraduate training which align with both partners' requirements.
The collaboration will let Shell access knowledge and expertise drawn from across the £330m portfolio of NERC-funded activities in UK universities and NERC's research centres.
The arrangement will help NERC build a deeper understanding of the challenges facing Shell to ensure the outputs of its research are relevant to and can be fully used by the company, including advice on the environmental implications of its activities. These insights will also help NERC design innovation investments that are relevant to similar partners.
Professor Duncan Wingham, Chief Executive of NERC, said, "One of the central tenets of NERC's new strategy is to develop new partnerships with UK business to help them use relevant environmental science required to drive innovation.
"It's hard to think of a sector of the UK economy where the need for a deep understanding of the environment is greater than in the oil and gas industry. This MoU is another step towards making sure NERC contributes to ensuring growth with responsible environmental management for the sector."
The collaboration will run for three years in the first instance.
