Death of a student in Madagascar
14 June 2007
The British Geological Survey (BGS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, was sorry to learn of the death of a Malagasy student, who was employed by local sub-contractors to work with the BGS geological mapping team in a remote part of northern Madagascar.
Reports of the incident are still sketchy but it is understood to have happened when a small group of students were returning to their lodgings in the small town of Bealanana, on the evening of 12 June. We understand that the town's authorities are investigating the incident.
BGS and NERC would like to express their deepest sympathy for the family, friends and colleagues of the young man, whose life has so tragically ended.
