Polar base manager awarded an MBE
6 January 2006
We are delighted to extend our congratulations to Nicholas Cox from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), who has received an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list. The award has been made for his services to British polar science.
Nick Cox has given outstanding service to the support of British polar science for more than 30 years. Starting in 1975 as a builder/boatman, he initially spent two Antarctic winters at Signy Island Research Station. Whilst serving as Base Commander at Signy Island in 1991, he was hand picked to establish, develop and manage a new Arctic research station within the international science centre at Svalbard, for the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
He is exceptionally well regarded by the Norwegian authorities and within the worldwide polar science community. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Member of the UK Arctic Consultative Forum.
Through his knowledge, unfailing good nature and sustained commitment, Nick has established himself as someone who represents internationally the very best that the UK brings to polar science.
Said Nick, "I have huge admiration for the work that the British Antarctic Survey scientists do and I'm delighted to be able to support them in this important work. We have some of the best scientists and technical crew in the world so I'm humbled that I've been chosen to receive this award."
