Reappointments to the Natural Environment Research Council

Science & Innovation Minister Lord Sainsbury has announced three reappointments to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
Mrs Karen Morgan, OBE, Mr Edwin Jenner, CEng FIChemE, and Professor Trevor Davies have all been reappointed until 31 July 2008.
NERC's Chief Executive, Professor Alan Thorpe, said, "I am very pleased that Karen, Ed and Trevor have agreed to continue serving on NERC's Council. Their combined range of knowledge and expertise is a valuable asset to us."

Notes
1. Appointments to NERC are made in accordance with the requirements of the Code of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public.
2. An honorarium of £6,120 per year is currently paid to all members of NERC's Council. (£8,160 per annum for those members who chair NERC Boards).
3. Mrs Karen Morgan, OBE, has wide experience within the chemical industry, financial services, higher education, environmental protection and the water industry. She is a former member of the Boards of the Environment Agency and the National Rivers Authority, and is presently a Director of Wessex Water, Deputy Chairman of WaterAid and Chairman of the University of the West of England.
4. Mr Edwin Jenner was the General Manager responsible for Global Legacies & Liabilities within AstraZeneca plc until his retirement in August 2002. He has worked extensively within the chemical industry for over 30 years. He is a chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers. He currently chairs NERC's Science & Innovation Strategy Board.
5. Professor Trevor Davies is Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research at the University of East Anglia. Previously he was Dean of the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA. He was Director of the Climatic Research Unit, UEA, from 1993-1998. His research interests have included: pollutant transport and deposition, and their links with atmospheric circulation changes; climate variability; chemical hydrology; local meteorology and wind energy. Much of his research has involved fieldwork. He has been a member of a number of international expert and review groups, and has engaged in much collaborative research with groups and organisations in Europe and North America.
6. NERC is one of the UK's research councils. It uses a budget of about £350m a year to fund and carry out impartial scientific research in the sciences of the environment. NERC trains the next generation of independent environmental scientists. It is addressing some of the key questions facing mankind such as global warming, renewable energy and sustainable economic development.
