Bangladesh claims
28 August 2002
The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has received a writ concerning a claim being made against it by a number of Bangladeshi residents.
The residents allege that NERC was negligent in not testing for the presence of arsenic in groundwater while carrying out some research in 1992. The research was carried out by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and was funded by the British Government.
NERC is confident that it has no legal liability and will vigorously defend the claim.
NERC and BGS are deeply concerned about the tragic problem that is developing as a result of the presence of arsenic in the groundwaters of Bangladesh and they continue to be involved in assisting to establish the causes of the problem and finding solutions to it.
