Bangladesh claims
13 August 2002
Press statement
The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) understands that a writ has been issued concerning a claim being made against it by a number of Bangladeshi residents who allege that NERC was negligent in not testing for the presence of arsenic in groundwater while carrying out research in 1992. The research was carried out by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and was funded by the British Government.
NERC and BGS are deeply concerned about the tragic problem that is developing as a result of the presence of arsenic in the groundwaters of Bangladesh and they continue to be involved in assisting to establish the causes of the problem and finding solutions to it.
However, the writ has not yet been served and NERC therefore has not seen the details of the claim so is unable to comment further.
