Prize for Huddersfield scientists

A team of scientists from the University of Huddersfield has won a £2,500 runner-up prize in a prestigious business competition run by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

Led by Philip Martin the colleagues have set up TDL Sensors, a spin-out company from the University of Huddersfield, to develop and sell low-cost gas sensors that can detect emissions from vehicles. Even fast moving vehicles cannot escape these roadside sensors. They can sniff out which pollutants are present in exhaust fumes and will pinpoint the offending vehicle over several lanes of a motorway.

This technology will have particular benefits to local authorities in monitoring air quality control, and to agencies such as the Vehicle Inspectorate. The company has already made its first sale of the sensors.
