UN Secretary-General visits the Arctic
1 September 2009
The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is today (1 September) visiting Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard.
The visit, ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December, highlights the importance of the Arctic in climate change research.
During the visit he will be briefed on the work being carried out at the NERC Arctic Station in Ny-Ålesund. This Arctic season has been extremely busy with research teams working on projects ranging from the microbial content of cryoconites (small melt-water pools on glaciers) to the response of marine organisms in changing temperatures. Projects involving glaciology, limnology, terrestrial and marine research are still underway.
Hosted by Kim Holmen, Director of Research at the Norsk Polarinstitutt, Ban Ki-moon will visit the South Korean Dasan Station and the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) laboratory.
