Professor Anthony Slingo
We are very sorry to learn that Professor Anthony Slingo, Professor of Environmental Science and Deputy Director of NERC's Environmental Systems Science Centre at the University of Reading, has died following a sudden illness.
Tony Slingo has been associated with NERC for most of his career and will be greatly missed by all of his colleagues.
Professor Robert Gurney, Director of the Environmental Systems Science Centre and a friend and colleague of Tony, said, "Tony has made an invaluable contribution to environmental science over many years. His work on observing and modelling the Earth's radiation budget is fundamental to our understanding of how the Earth system works. He will be sorely missed not just in Reading but by his many friends around the world."
Professor Alan Thorpe, NERC's Chief Executive, said, "I was very upset to hear about Tony's death. We knew each other over many years including during the period when I was at the Hadley Centre. Tony was an excellent scientist and a hugely valued colleague to me, and to many in the NERC community. Our sympathy and condolences go to his wife, Julia, and his daughters Mary and Anna."
