Investigating the oceans
18 October 2007
The House of Commons Select Committee on Science & Technology has today published a report of its inquiry Investigating the Oceans. The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is currently reviewing, along with other funders of marine research, the overall recommendations made in the report and will respond through the appropriate channels in due course.
NERC is pleased that the report acknowledges the importance of the 'Oceans 2025' programme. The Council is investing around £24m a year, almost half of its annual spend on marine science, in this five-year strategic research programme. Addressing nine major science themes, the programme will help us to further understand the vast and complex ocean environment and develop a more ocean-wise strategy for humanity in the 21st century.
Oceans 2025 will be delivered by seven UK marine centres and will also involve a wider community of researchers, industry, policy makers and the public. It will make major strides forward in co-ordinating marine research within the UK.
