      <description>&lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Grade:&lt;/strong&gt; NERC-6 (£26450-£29710) - Full Time&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Location:&lt;/strong&gt; NERC - SO Polaris House&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Closing date:&lt;/strong&gt; Friday, May 31, 2013&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Reference:&lt;/strong&gt; IRC92470&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;We have a number of differing roles and duties will vary, depending on the role.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Duties in the Science area may involve:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Administering NERC’s science and innovation investments; managing the process of research proposal assessment; administering research programmes; acting as programme secretary; external liaison with the research community: being a key contact for defined portfolio areas and activities.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Primary Tasks&lt;br /&gt;The primary purpose of the Science Programme Officer (SPO) role is to administer NERC’s science and innovation investments. NERC invests in research and training at research centres and universities through blue-skies, strategically directed research programmes, international and other initiatives.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;SPOs work with people at all levels within NERC and with other science users, funders and providers. They work flexibly across a diversity of business activities, science portfolios, and teams, according to the needs of the business. NERC currently employs more than 20 SPOs working across a range of business groups. A few are assigned to specialist areas (eg international strategy, scientific services and facilities team, Living with Environmental Change) but most are assigned to broad science portfolio teams. SPOs may report to several team leaders for different activities, but will report primarily to their SPO manager.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Duties within Strategic Management Group (SMG) will vary according to priorities in the team at any time but may include:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Providing the robust evidence that NERC needs to inform strategy, business performance management and promote NERC to its funding departments and stakeholders; managing the collection and analysis of relevant  management data/information in support of key reports (external and internal audiences) and corporate performance evaluation; responding appropriately to parliamentary inquiries/questions; managing bilateral meetings with government departments and agencies; coordinating and drafting NERC responses to queries and consultations; acting as secretary to one of NERC’s executive or advisory boards.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Secondary Tasks&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;These will vary according to role, but all positions will require the role holder to be flexible, contribute to his/her wider team and provide cover for colleagues as necessary&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</description>
