Dr Peter CostiganIndependent Consultant

Peter has a first degree in Biology and a PhD in land reclamation. Following 12 years of research on soil and crop science in the public and private sector, Peter joined the UK Ministry of Agriculture in 1991 and managed the Ministry's Agri-Environment science for 12 years. In 2003 Peter moved to the Environment and Rural policy group in Defra where he oversaw Defra's evidence on a wide range of environmental issues, and was head of the Natural Environment Science Division and the science coordinator for the environment. He was particularly involved in developing the evidence base to support the ecosystem approach. He represented Defra on the client group of the UK National Ecosystem Assessment, and was chair of the UK Biodiversity Research Advisory Group. He was also a member of NERC's National Capability Advisory Group. Since retiring from Defra in 2012, Peter has acted as an impact assessor on Panel B of HEFCE's Research Excellence Framework, has chaired the impact panel for the evaluation of NERC centres and is an associate editor of Soil Use and Management.

Juliet Davenport OBECEO and Founder, Good Energy Group

Juliet Davenport is the founder and CEO of Good Energy Group PLC, a Wiltshire-based green electricity company that employs more than 200 people enabling individuals, businesses and communities to make a difference to climate change through its products and services. In January 2013, Juliet Davenport was awarded the OBE for services to renewable electricity supplies.

Juliet's passion for renewable energy grew out of an early interest in climate change, which she studied as part of her physics degree. Wanting to make a difference in this area, she followed her degree with an internship in European energy policy and a masters in economics. It was after this that she felt that people should be part of the solution, not just seen as the problem, and was inspired to set up Good Energy to encourage householders and business to get involved.

A founding member of the Social Stock Exchange, Good Energy strives to lead by example and set the standard for the energy market as an ethically and socially responsible company - showing that an energy business can be commercially successful because of its values, not despite them.

In 2013 the company was named as the best green electricity supplier by Ethical Consumer magazine and came first in the Which? energy company customer satisfaction survey for three years in a row.

Dr Marta FernandezGlobal Research Leader, Arup

Marta is the global research leader at Arup for foresight, research and innovation.

Marta's role involves developing and implementing Arup's corporate research strategy and cultivating Arup's Research Network. She is responsible for managing the funding Arup invest in R&D projects. Marta is part of the Arup Corporate Venturing Group, and also represents Arup on the Executive Board of the European funded Energy Efficient Buildings Initiative, the European Construction Technology Platform, and the UK National Platform for Construction.

Marta is a chartered chemical engineer and has a PhD in carbon sequestration in cementitious solid waste. She has had executive business training at London Business School, Cambridge and Imperial College Business School in innovation, R&D management and technology commercialisation. Marta's expertise is in global research portfolio management, research strategy, partnering, knowledge transfer, impact of R&D and research based business opportunity creation. Marta teaches R&D management in the University of Granada and holds honorary appointments at University College London in chemical engineering and management sciences and innovation. She is member of IChemE, the Innovation and Emerging Technologies Panel at the IET and a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts.

Dr Phil HeadsAssociate Director, Strategy & Impact, NERC

Phil is currently responsible for NERC strategy and spending review plans, and the impact evidence that informs them, working closely with NERC's parent department in government, BIS.

A major challenge for researchers and government is to develop robust and compelling evidence of the economic and societal benefits ('impacts') that flow from NERC and other public investment in research and innovation. Phil's team work with researchers, users, Research Councils UK, HEFCE, Innovate UK, BIS and others to develop the evidence that informs NERC and government policy and investment in research and innovation.

Prior to his current role, Phil held senior manager and director roles in NERC science, innovation and corporate change management. Before joining NERC he managed the NERC Centre for Population Biology at Imperial College. Phil has a PhD in ecology and an MBA from Henley Management College.

Carmel McQuaidHead of Sustainable Business, Marks and Spencer

Carmel McQuaid's primary role is working with colleagues across the business as M&S transforms to a much more sustainable business. She leads policy and innovation work on climate change, circular economy, transparency. An important part of this is finding inspirational ways to engage M&S employees and customers. A particular focus is working with NGO, university and industry partnerships to drive mass market sustainability in product supply chains.

Prior to M&S she worked as a consultant in manufacturing, supply chain and sustainability for PA Consulting working across a range of industries from aerospace to consumer products. She started her career as a chemical engineer working for National Starch in Germany and the UK.

Professor Don Nutbeam Vice-chancellor, University of Southampton

Professor Nutbeam is the vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton and a professor of public health.

His career has spanned positions in universities, government, health services and an independent research institute. From 2003-9 he was in senior academic roles in the University of Sydney, Australia. For the period 2000 - 2003, Professor Nutbeam was head of public health in the UK government Department of Health. Between 1990 and 2000, he was professor of public health, associate dean of medicine and head of the school of public health at the University of Sydney.

His research interests have included social and behavioural interventions in schools and communities as well as studies of health literacy, and adolescent health behaviour. He is author of more than 120 publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as two popular public health text books. He remains research active through funded projects and PhD student supervision.

He has substantial international experience in both developing and developed countries, working as an advisor and consultant for the World Health Organisation over a 25 year period, and as consultant and team leader in projects for the World Bank.

Bob SorrellVice President Public Partnerships, BP

Robert Sorrell is BP's vice president for public partnerships. He is the associate director for the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials; a 10 year $100m investment by BP with the hub at the University of Manchester and spokes at the University of Cambridge, Imperial College and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Robert is also BP's technology policy advisor for the UK and EU.

Prior to this, in 2006 Robert was appointed as BP's vice president for refining & marketing technology strategy. In this role Robert was responsible for developing BP's long term technology strategy across its global fuels, lubricants, refining and chemicals businesses. Robert also managed BP's global hydrogen transport business with operational responsibility for a global network of refuelling sites.

Robert joined BP in 1987 from Durham University having earlier completed his PhD at Cambridge University. During his early career, he held a number of research, business and market development roles. In 2001 Robert became marketing director for Europe and Asia. In this role he was responsible for developing and implementing customer segmentation and pricing strategy for the chemicals businesses. In 2003 Robert took over as technology strategy manager for refining and marketing. In 2005 Robert was appointed technology vice president for business marketing. He was responsible for coordinating technology activities across BP's air, marine, industrial lubricants and bitumen businesses.

Robert is on the Board of Breathing Buildings, a natural ventilation company, as a non-executive director. He is also on the board of the UK Technology Strategy Board.
