NERC PURE Associates: Harnessing Science for Improved Risk Assessment

NERC funded scientists to work with partners in business, policy and NGOs to apply their knowledge and skills to improve assessments of natural hazard risk and enable decision-makers to take action to manage risk.

The projects, of between three to six months in length, are transferring existing knowledge, models and expertise into partner organisations in order to address real business, policy or NGO problems that arise due to uncertainty and risk in relation to natural hazards.

Building on PURE Associates funding call

NERC has built on the investment on its previous investment in PURE Associates by awarding additional Innovation funding in July 2014. The new projects will build on the outcomes of the original PURE Associates projects or be based on new opportunities which have arisen as a result of the successful collaborations established between researchers and stakeholders.

The projects should translate, develop and apply existing NERC data, models, knowledge or expertise, ideally fusing with that of project partners, to:

  1. produce robust risk assessments that integrate measures or models of exposure and vulnerability; to enable decision-makers to take action to manage risk;
  2. develop tools to support decision-making under environmental uncertainty.
