Environmental Risks to Infrastructure Innovation funding call - Announcement of opportunity
Brokerage Event: 15 March 2017
Deadline for Expressions of Interest: 16:00 on 3 May 2017
Deadline for Full proposals: 11 July 2017
As part of the Environmental Risks to Infrastructure Innovation Programme (ERIIP), NERC invites Expressions of Interest (EoI) for innovation projects which apply existing research to industry challenges. Successful applicants at EoI stage will be asked to submit a full proposal.
The ERIIP is a collaboration between NERC and infrastructure owners and operators to enable them to access research and use environmental science to identify, quantify and manage environmental risks to UK infrastructure, such as those from extreme weather events and climate change.
For this third ERIIP funding call NERC are encouraging proposals that address the challenges of ERIIP members (which are publicised alongside this AO) as well as fill gaps in the portfolio of themes, hazards and sectors within the scope of the programme- as described in the Announcement of Opportunity document below.
Expressions of Interest are invited for collaborative projects between academia and industry to develop and apply existing science. Projects may be between 3-18 months in length. Successful applicants at EoI stage will be asked to submit a full proposal. NERC has up to £1 million available for this call and envisages funding a cohort of projects within this budget. This call funds all costs at 80% full economic cost (FEC).
All projects must have project partners related to UK infrastructure, eg infrastructure owners, operators, regulators or policymakers. Proposals should demonstrate the project partner's challenges related to environmental risk, how existing science can be applied to develop a 'solution' and the impact that the project will have on the project partner.
A brokerage event is being held on 15 March 2017 (registration is now closed) to enable collaboration between academics and ERIIP members, and a partnering service will be available through CIRIA - external link, the programme coordinators. A list of organisations looking to develop collaborative projects with academics, including their areas of interest and contact details are provided in the challenges document below.

NERC has launched an Innovative Monitoring Approaches funding call focusing on projects which address industry - and regulatory-driven challenges and opportunities to develop new innovative approaches for monitoring or exploit existing technologies that support environmental science in innovative ways; in relation to the infrastructure, oil and gas and offshore renewable energy sectors. Both the Innovative Monitoring Approaches call and this call are happening on similar timescales, applications should be submitted to the most appropriate call.
