Policy on resubmissions

All resubmissions will be treated equally as follows:

All responsive mode schemes except the consortium/large grant scheme:

  • Unsuccessful proposals can be resubmitted after a period of at least nine months from the closing date of the original submission.
  • We will assess resubmitted proposals alongside all other applications. They will not receive preferential treatment.
  • Data on which proposals are resubmitted will be used for data analysis purposes only.

Consortium/large grants:

  • Large grant proposals unsuccessful at the full proposal stage may not be resubmitted unless specifically invited by NERC. In this case, applicants will be advised of the most appropriate closing date.
  • Unsuccessful large grant outline proposals may be resubmitted to subsequent outline closing dates.
  • Unsuccessful proposals submitted to the responsive mode consortium grant scheme (now closed) may not be resubmitted to the large grant scheme (outline or full proposal) unless resubmission was specifically invited by NERC at the time of rejection.

Research programmes:

  • Unsuccessful proposals may not be resubmitted to subsequent funding rounds within the research programme. This is because, unlike responsive schemes, different funding rounds within a research programme often have different funding priorities.
  • A proposal that is unsuccessful in a research programme, but is within the NERC remit, can be resubmitted into a responsive scheme. Those that are rejected on the basis of programme remit can be resubmitted at any time. However, those that have been through the review process cannot resubmit until at least nine months after the original closing date.
  • Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) will allow applicants to resubmit proposals to its programme. This is because, unlike other research programmes, it does not have focused funding rounds.
