Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry Research Programme
Programme timetable
NERC and Defra would like to announce the indicative timing of some key dates for the Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry Research Programme.
The main aim of the Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry Research Programme is to reduce the uncertainty in our understanding of carbon and nutrient cycling (including iron) within the shelf seas and their overall role in global biogeochemical cycles.
This programme will award funding of c. £6·5m to support four large multi-institutional grants to deliver this aim through research focused on UK shelf seas.
The timetable for key programme activities going forward is as follows:
late October 2011 - Release of an Announcement of Opportunity for outline grant proposals.
14 November 2011 - A workshop at the National Oceanography Centre, Liverpool to:
- ensure the research community are aware of the NERC National Capability - in terms of facilities, infrastructure, modelling, etc - and partnership opportunities with UK agencies that may contribute to the delivery of research;
- discuss the science challenges and possible approaches to undertake research; and
- discuss opportunities for collaboration.
(nb registration closing date is 7 November 2011)
14 December 2011 - Deadline for outline grant proposals.
Individuals interested in submitting a proposal are encouraged to attend the workshop, as attendance may provide an opportunity to start to develop collaborations with other scientists. However, attendance of the workshop is not a prerequisite for submitting a proposal.
This information is provided in good faith to help researchers prepare to respond to the funding opportunities. However, plans are subject to change and so timing cannot be guaranteed until formal announcements are issued and proposals invited.
