Chair of the Strategic Programme Advisory Group
Closing date for applications: 16:00 on 3 December 2013
The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is the UK's main agency for funding and managing research, training and knowledge exchange in the environmental sciences. Our work covers the full range of atmospheric, earth, biological, terrestrial and aquatic sciences, from the deep oceans to the upper atmosphere and from the poles to the equator.
NERC is seeking a non-executive Chair for its new Strategic Programme Advisory Group (SPAG). The Strategic Programme Advisory Group will provide recommendations to NERC's Science and Innovation Strategy Board (SISB) and the NERC Executive on NERC's Strategic Research Programme and Strategic Highlight Topic investments. The Chair of SPAG will also help shape the processes used to identify and fund strategic research and ensure that NERC's strategic investments are community driven and respond to identified societal challenges.
You will have extensive experience and understanding of research related to environmental science and have the ability to consider emerging needs and opportunities across all of the NERC remit - not confined to your immediate areas of expertise - balance competing ideas and consider wider political, business and societal impacts.
In return, we offer the opportunity to play a significant role in helping shape the future of NERC strategic science. It is expected that the role will require ten days per year for meetings plus additional preparation time. The appointment is for one year in the first instance with the expectation that it will continue for a maximum of three years in total and commence on 3 February 2014.
To apply for this position you will need to provide a current CV (up to 4 pages) and completed application form. Before applying, candidates are advised to review the person specification and role description for the Chair.
Interviews will be held in London on 8 January 2014
