Environment YES

YES winners

The winners of the 2012 Environment YES competition were Gemma Parker, Jon Mackey, Sarah Smith and Simon Gregory, all from the British Geological Survey (BGS). They are pictured below with Indigo's sponsors Robert Fisher and Adam Prothero, and Kirsty Grainger, NERC Head of People & Skills.

The team formed an imaginary company called 'Capture Company' using an idea for an innovative new carbon filtering system that could be easily fitted to car exhausts. As winners, the team received £1000 prize money and complimentary Indigo workshops.

Indigo's Managing Director, Robert Fisher, commented "We are delighted to fund the development of one of the UK's most precious assets - our home-grown scientists! This programme strengthens that all important link between scientific know-how and commercial acumen - vital for these talented teams and their careers."

Minister for Universities & Science David Willetts said "I would like to congratulate the winners of the Biotechnology and Environment YES competitions on their success. Scientists who are able to combine their expertise with an understanding of business are a very precious resource. By learning how to translate research into wider successes, they can help ensure their work delivers the maximum benefits to society and the economy.

"I am impressed that the participants are taking the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge at this early stage of their careers - it suggests a bright future for the commercialisation of UK research."
