Examples of science ideas
The science idea you base your business plan on can be hypothetical science. It does not need to be real science, but should be as realistic and feasible as possible.
Your aim is to devise a business plan around this science idea that you can then use to attract venture capitalists to 'invest' in your company.
Some ideas from previous competitions include:
A novel enzyme was identified in a marine alga that was able to prevent biofilm formation; the company was set up to exploit this technology in the dental hygiene area.
Research on weather forecasting led to the development of a computer model able to integrate a range of weather forecast information into a localised and highly accurate 'nowcast' that could be used by sporting venues to determine what weather they will experience at a specific time.
A novel alga was discovered that when grown in polluted water could utilise the pollutants while producing large amounts of oil; the oil could be sold to a refinery to produce bio-diesel for use in cars.
A novel catalyst was developed that absorbs and locks away nitrous oxide gases. A company was formed to manufacture paint containing this catalyst for use in city centres to reduce pollution levels.
A highly efficient microbe was discovered that was able to generate electricity from cow slurry. The technology to do this could be used on farms to generate their own electricity for use in dairies and reduce the costs of waste disposal.
You may find it easier to base your company on science in the area you are working in, as you will have a better idea of the possibilities that are available. It also means you will be able to concentrate on the commercial aspects of your business rather than understanding and developing the science idea behind it.
Other examples of ideas based in the area of biotechnology can be found on the Biotechnology YES website.
The science needs only to be realistic, not already 'out there'. If you want to discuss your idea briefly, please contact Michal Filtness.
