Training and secondment opportunities

Industrial CASE studentships
For PhD supervisors who want to enhance the training of their student by collaborating with public or private sector organisations.

Environment Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (Environment YES)
For PhD students/early postdocs who want an insight into commercialisation.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships Link to external site (KTP)
For business to access the skills and resources of the UK knowledge base.
NERC has a current KTP targeted call, in the area of offshore renewable energy supply chain. The closing date is 24 April 2012.

Policy internships for NERC-funded PhD students
For NERC-funded PhD students to spend 3 months preparing briefing material or reports in a policy-making environment.

Policy Placement Scheme
NERC's Policy Placement Scheme allows researchers and other staff involved in environmental science research to work closely with policy-makers within government and other organisations in the UK. The Policy Placement Scheme covers two types of placement:

  • a 'Fellowship' placement whereby the applicant works for 3 to 12 months in a policy-making organisation on a topic specified by the organisation;
  • a 'Work shadow' placement whereby the applicant sets up their own work shadowing arrangement in a policy-making organisation, for up to one month.

Royal Society Industry Fellowships
For scientists in academia or industry who want to work in the other sector.

Science to policy workshops for NERC researchers
Approximately every six months NERC organises science to policy training workshops, usually in collaboration with a partner organisation.

Scottish Government internships for NERC funded PhD students
Pilot scheme for NERC-funded PhD students to spend 3 months engaged in policy analysis within the Scottish Government.
