Summer school and short course support
The following courses have funded places available:
Vitae (formerly the UK GRAD programme)
NERC funds and supports the work and activities of Vitae, a national programme supporting the personal, professional and career development of researchers.
By working together with the Research Councils UK, higher education institutions and research institutes, Vitae provides specific support for both doctoral researchers and research staff.
For postgraduate researchers
A comprehensive section 'Postgraduate researchers' on the Vitae website provides information and advice on everything from managing yourself and your research, to marketing yourself to potential employers.
The website also lists events of interest to you, including events run by other organisations that relate to researcher careers.
Subscribe to GRADBritain, Vitae's free online magazine written by and for postgraduate researchers.
PGR tips is Vitae's monthly email, which offers tips and advice to help you through your PhD.
Vitae also runs a small programme of one-day Careers in Focus events and national GRADschools (three day career development courses). National GRADschools are designed for researchers in their second year or above and are free to attend whilst you are still receiving research council funding for your PhD. In addition, your own institution may also run a local GRADschool.
British Geological Survey, School of Field Geology
various dates and locations - see programme
The BGS School of Field Geology aims to support teaching of field mapping skills to PhD students at UK university geoscience departments. Funds are available for a limited number of PhD students to attend our core courses, which are run by and for BGS staff. NERC-funded students may apply to attend one of the courses, with all tuition, accommodation, food and travel costs covered.
Statistics for Environmental Evaluation: Quantifying the environment
19-23 August 2013, University of Glasgow
This one-week course provides practically motivated training in key statistical analysis and modelling skills for environmental scientists. The course is based on earlier successful courses run since 2004. Sponsorship is available for NERC funded PhD students. This is a very popular course with places for a maximum of 35 students, so early registration is recommended.
Updated course information and registration details will shortly appear on the University of Glasgow's website under 'conferences and workshops'. The registration form should be downloaded, completed and sent to Susan Christie (contact details on form) by 24 May 2013.
Further details or queries should be addressed to Professor Marian Scott.
