ESRC/NERC Interdisciplinary Studentship Competition

For a number of years NERC and ESRC have jointly run an interdisciplinary studentship competition funding 20 studentships per year. Due to the timing of the comprehensive spending review settlement and ESRC's introduction of its new Doctoral Training Centre network it has not been possible to run the same competition this year. However, we both remain committed to supporting studentships at the interface and hope to make provision for further joint studentships next year.

Successful ESRC/NERC interdisciplinary studentships are administered by ESRC and subject to the terms and conditions of ESRC studentships Link to external site.

NERC Interdisciplinary Studentships for 2011

To continue support at this interface in 2011, NERC has funded ten studentships to undertake PhD research at the interface between environmental science and economic and social science. These have been funded via a NERC DTG and are subject to NERC Terms and Conditions.

The studentships were awarded to institutions, based on their previous success in the competition (between 2007 and 2010). The Institutions being offered a studentship are:

  • Durham University
  • Imperial College London
  • Kings College London
  • University of Kent
  • Lancaster University
  • University of Leeds
  • University of Stirling
  • University College London
  • University of East Anglia
  • University of York

The studentship should be at the environmental science/socioeconomic boundary and be truly interdisciplinary with a supervisor from both the environmental and social sciences. The studentship should also fall within the remit of the Living with Environmental Change (LWEC) programme.
