How to apply for a NERC studentship

This page is for potential supervisors applying for a studentship from NERC. Potential students can not apply directly to NERC.

Applying through the Je-S system

You must use the Joint electronic-Submission (Je-S) system to prepare and submit your studentship proposal. In order to apply, the organisation where the studentship will be held must be registered to use Je-S. Most UK research organisations are now registered. A summary is available of organisations' current Je-S registration status.

If you do not have a Je-S account

You will need to create one. To do this, you will need to select the option "Create Account" from the main Je-S log in screen and then select the option that you require the ability to create and submit studentship proposals. You may wish to refer to the relevant Je-S System tutorials for details of how to do this.

If you have a Je-S account

If you have a Je-S account, but it is unregistered, you can change this to a registered account in the "My Details" section of the Je-S system.

If you have forgotten your account log in details or are unsure whether you already have an account please contact the Je-S helpdesk who will advise you.

Submitting your Studentship Proposal through Je-S

The submission route that your Studentship proposal will take depends upon how the host Research Organisation has configured its submission process. The tutorials give an overview of the submission process through Je-S. Once you have set up a registered account, you can add a new document, then select NERC/Studentship Proposal/Directed Research Studentship (includes Open CASE). Please ensure you select the correct call from the drop-down list on the project details page.

Closing dates

Studentship proposals can only be submitted in response to specific calls. There will be strict closing dates for each call that will be detailed on the call documentation.

Please be aware that for all calls, proposals can be submitted to NERC up to 16:00 (4pm) on the closing date. The Je-S system allows no further submissions after that time.

Please remember to allow plenty of time - the onward submission to NERC also requires one or two approver/submitter steps within your Research Organisation.

Help and further information

There are tutorials and a detailed help and guidance section on the Je-S web pages. You can also contact a dedicated help desk (staffed Monday to Friday, 09:00 - 17:00 UK time):
