Responsive Research (Algorithm/Quota) PhD Studentships 2011

2011 Algorithm/Quota PhD Studentships (46KB)
The 2011 PhD studentship allocation was posted on the website on 2 February 2011.

2011 Algorithm

240 studentships were allocated through the algorithm, which was based on research grant spend and fellowship FTEs in the three financial years April 2007 to March 2010. Research and fellowship grant information can be found on Grants on the Web.

NERC Doctoral Training Grants (DTGs)

All PhD funding is now provided in the form of Doctoral Training Grants (DTGs), which includes all funding for fieldwork and exceptional consumables. The Terms and Conditions associated with NERC DTGs can be found in the most recent version of the Studentship Handbook. The cross-council Training Grant T&Cs (Section G) are applicable to DTGs from five Councils (NERC, BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC and STFC) and interdisciplinary studentships could be jointly funded from the DTGs of two of these councils. The same eligibility rules still apply and details of these are in the Studentship Handbook, Section B.

NERC will no longer provide separate departmental DTGs. One DTG will be awarded per Research Organisation for all algorithm/quota studentships for 2011. The DTGs will be announced in April/May after the new cross-council fees rates have been agreed. The DTG can only have one grant holder (PI equivalent), who will need to be Jes registered. The person who will be the DTG holder should e-mail their Jes person ID and contact details to Training Awards Team by end February 2011.

Provision of Studentship Details to NERC

Departments no longer need to nominate individuals to NERC in advance of starting. Details of the student and the project, including CASE partners details, should be submitted through the Je-S Studentship Details Portal (SDP) within one month of the student starting. The 30% CASE rule still applies and it is important that information on CASE partners is entered on the Je-S SDP in the 'Project Partner' screen.
