Peer Review College
Call for membership 2013
The call for new Pool of Chairs members has been reopened for Panel A (Earth sciences, glacial & cryospheric systems and palaeoenvironments)
NERC are still seeking to recruit two new Pool of Chairs members for its Panel A portfolio, which broadly covers NERC's remit in the Earth sciences, glacial & cryospheric systems and palaeoenvironments (for more details see the panel portfolios). The call is now open and will close on 16 December 2013.
There was a limited response from the community to the original call for applications for this important and influential role, which led the Science & Innovation Strategy Board to conclude that the process had not been sufficiently open for them to approve appointments in this panel area. NERC has subsequently decided to reopen the call.
NERC would like to encourage all community members with the appropriate expertise in the Panel A portfolio (see portfolio table below) to put themselves forward for Pool of Chairs membership. We hope that you will join us in ensuring that this panel area is appropriately represented, in order to maximise the benefits of changes to the College structure and peer review processes being introduced in 2014.
Further details about the role
In the first year of appointment, successful applicants will act as deputy to an existing Chair for a particular scheme (either Fellowships or Standard & New Investigator), before taking up the post of Chair for that scheme themselves in 2015. Chairs will be recruited for a two-year term initially with a review after the first year. The term may be extended by mutual agreement.
Newly recruited Chairs will be required to attend an induction meeting on 25 February 2014 in Birmingham and must be prepared to hold the dates for either Fellowships or Standard & New Investigator moderating panel meetings, which are as shown below.
|Fellowships sift||5 February 2014|
|Fellowships interviews||26-27 March 2014|
|Standard & New Investigator||3-4 June 2014|
|Standard & New Investigator||2-3 December 2014|
Conditions of membership
In accepting the invitation to join the College, all members are expected to agree to NERC's terms and conditions for membership. Chairs will be assigned to a particular panel area and/or funding scheme but will be expected to work across all responsive mode panel portfolios if necessary.
Application process and timetable
Applicants are asked to email the completed form to firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday 16 December 2013, along with a CV (maximum two sides of A4) and a list of your publications (maximum two sides A4).
Applicants will be informed of decisions on 20 January 2014. Successful applicants will be informed which scheme they are being invited to Chair at the point of invitation. The candidate invited to chair the Fellowships scheme will be asked to observe the sift meeting but then asked to act as deputy chair for the interview panel.
Previous applicants for the Panel A Chair role need not reapply - they will be automatically included in the selection process unless they opt to be removed from consideration.
Selection process and criteria
A panel comprised of SISB and current Pool of Chairs members will consider how applicants/nominees fit the criteria for membership for the role and will have responsibility for recommending new Pool of Chairs members to NERC.
