Antarctic Logistic Support
Logistic support - Responsive mode
As a result of changes that NERC has made to the way research is funded and delivered, proposals which require Antarctic logistic support are now considered through the responsive mode standard grant schemes, rather than through a separate initiative (Antarctic Funding Initiative).
To ensure that the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is able to consider the likely logistic support requirements at an early stage, before proposals have been developed in detail, applicants need to complete a Preliminary Request for Antarctic Logistic Support form. This form can be downloaded from the Antarctic Proposals and Fieldwork Planning website.
If the proposed project is entirely ship-based, however, then this form is not needed. For proposals which require ship-based facilities and other Antarctic logistics, both a Ship-time & Marine Equipment (SME) application form and an Antarctic Logistic support form should be submitted. Further details can be found in the Research Grants Handbook.
The completed form should be submitted to the Antarctic Funding Office at BAS (afibas@bas.ac.uk) no later than three months prior to the submission deadline of the intended call. Thus, for intended proposal submissions to the December 2012 standard grant round, completed Preliminary Request for Antarctic Logistic Support forms need to be received no later than 16:00 on 4 September 2012. The requests will be considered by a logistics panel and feedback supplied to applicants.
Subject to the logistic requests receiving approval, applicants will be required to complete the detailed Antarctic Logistic Support Questionnaire and attach this to the full proposal submitted to NERC, via the Je-S system. In the logistic feedback, a reference number will be provided; this should be quoted on the Antarctic Logistics Support Questionnaire form. This questionnaire can be downloaded from the Antarctic Proposals and Fieldwork Planning website.
Approved Preliminary Request for Antarctic Logistic Support applications are valid for a 12 month period from the date of application. Any funding applications that request Antarctic logistic support without having received prior logistic approval will not be accepted by NERC.
