The National Oceanography Centre, part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world (http://noc.ac.uk/).
With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development. Working closely with its partners and associates it provides capability to meet the needs across the UK marine science community.
A position is available for a programmer with software engineering skills in an experienced multidisciplinary group at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton (NOCS). As part of the Electronics and Software team you will develop embedded systems for use in Oceanographic sensors deployed at sea, in coastal areas and in Polar Regions. These sensors provide data for use in climate modelling, determining the impact of offshore Carbon Capture and Storage projects and improving our understanding of the world’s oceans.
Your role will be the design, implementation and test of firmware and software components for the sensors. This will include documentation of designs, procuring commercial libraries and interaction with our customers to determine requirements. You will be used to working in a team and presenting design ideas for review orally and in writing. You will take design responsibility for the work packages assigned to you including final documentation, production and testing.
A good knowledge of C and experience of low level coding for microcontrollers is essential. Use of the Microchip PIC18 series would be extremely valuable as would experience writing for Cortex M and any pre-emptive RTOS. Previous development of Windows applications using Visual Studio and C# .NET is required, ideally using WPF for the UI elements. The use of MATLAB for data processing and LabView for simple application development is advantageous.
Informal enquiries only (please do not send CVs) should be directed to Ed Waugh (ed.waugh@noc.ac.uk).
