The National Oceanography Centre, part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world (http://noc.ac.uk/).

With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development. Working closely with its partners and associates it provides capability to meet the needs across the UK marine science community.

We offer the position of Head of the Analytical Sciences team in the Ocean Technology and Engineering Group at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton (NOCS). You will lead this research sub-group, publishing widely and attracting funding as principle investigator enhancing NOC’s existing reputation for in situ marine and environmental analytics and sensor development.

Your role will provide leadership and expert guidance to the analytical science team enabling rapid development and optimisation of new high performance analytical techniques that can be applied to in situ instrumentation. Existing technologies, which you will further develop include assays for water chemistry such as luminescence lifetime indicators (optodes), reagent based colorimetric and fluorescence assays (for nutrients, metals, carbonate parameters and many others) and electrochemistry techniques. In addition the group has developed micro-assays for molecular biology (e.g. nucleic acid analysis via qPCR and NASBA) and cytometry which you will optimise and extend.

The post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available for 3 years with further extension possible.  The basic salary is in the range of £31,020 to £48,720 per annum and is dependent on experience.
