The National Oceanography Centre, part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world (http://noc.ac.uk/).
With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development. Working closely with its partners and associates it provides capability to meet the needs across the UK marine science community.
A position is available for an Electronics Engineer in an experienced multidisciplinary group at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton (NOCS). As part of the Electronics and Software team you will develop embedded systems for use in Oceanographic sensors deployed at sea, in coastal areas and in Polar Regions. These sensors provide data for use in climate modelling, determining the impact of offshore Carbon Capture and Storage projects and improving our understanding of the world’s oceans.
Your role will be the design, implementation and test of electronic hardware for the sensors. This will include documentation of designs, procuring commercial manufacturing services and interaction with our customers to determine requirements. You will be used to working in a team and presenting design ideas for review orally and in writing. You will take design responsibility for the work packages assigned to you including final documentation, production and testing.
A good knowledge of analogue and digital circuits, especially in the area of data conversion is essential. Practical experience, design, testing, measuring and debugging complex circuits is required as well as PCB layout. Embedded firmware programming in C and VHDL for FPGA targets would be an advantage.

This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available for 3 years. The basic salary is in the range of £26,450 to £29,710 per annum.
