The National Oceanography Centre, part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world.

With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development.  Working closely with its partners and associates it provides capability to meet the needs across the UK marine science community.

A vacancy has arisen for a Sea Systems Technician to work as part of a team of Sea System Technicians supporting the Natural Environment Research Council's Marine Facilities Programme (MFP) through provision of safe, efficient and effective functioning of NMFSS marine science equipment and support infrastructure, both ashore and at sea. This support will include working on complex mechanical marine equipment and systems.

Shore duties will include the repair and maintenance of equipment, systems and facilities to meet the requirements of the science cruise programme and participation in cruise planning to identify solutions to scientific and engineering needs.  Whilst at sea you will participate as a member of the onboard technical support team with responsibility for the operation and maintenance of NMF equipment as required.

You will have a recognized mechanical based engineering apprenticeship to NVQ Level3, BTEC National Diploma, City and Guilds or other recognized equivalent in a mechanical engineering subject. You will have practical experience in an engineering work environment and you should be experienced in the use of conventional workshop machines and tools.  A working knowledge of pneumatic or hydraulic systems is essential and an HNC/HND in a mechanical engineering subject would be desirable.

This is a permanent position on NERC terms and conditions and the salary is in the range of £19,740 to £23,390 per annum.  Sea time of up to 90 days per year is required for this role, which attracts a daily allowance.
