Our work at Swindon Office
NERC is both a funder and a provider of environmental science. Our research centres are mainly providers of research. Our offices in Swindon are sited alongside six other research councils and provide the bulk of our corporate administrative functions, including:
- coordinating strategy, planning, decision-making, performance management, reporting and external relations for the whole of NERC.
- acting as the UK funding organisation for environmental science: developing policy and administering funding to universities, public-sector research establishments and (in some cases) private-sector partners.
Administrative functions that are shared between the research councils (in areas including HR, finance, IT support and procurement) have been transferred to Shared Service Centre Ltd, a private company that is owned by the seven research councils.
The work at Swindon Office is structured under three directors - two who are focused on science and one who deals with other aspects of NERC organisation and delivery. These Swindon-based directors work closely together as a team and with research centre directors on the NERC Executive Board and with the Chief Executive.
