Science in society

Climate change, natural hazards, environment and health, and genetic modification all make environmental science one of the most high profile and exciting areas of research in the UK. Communicating our work in these areas, and across our entire remit, is a major NERC priority. We want to encourage more people of all ages and from all sectors of society to engage with researchers and contribute their views on current research and future directions.

Together the research councils have agreed a strategy to take forward this ambition - 'Science in Society'. This strategy is overseen by Research Councils UK.

The strategy has four main aims:

  • Finding out what people think
  • Reaching young people and teachers
  • Encouraging researchers to engage with the public
  • Keeping people informed and up-to-date
