NERC Safety Procedures are listed below. They set standards for the management of specific areas of safety. They have a common format:
- Introduction - the scope of the Procedure
- Operational procedure - how it should be managed (mainly aimed at management)
- Roles and responsibilities - for senior, middle, junior management and staff
- System flow diagram - summary of the operational procedure and responsibilities
- What might go wrong? - probable sources of system and individual failure - guidance on pitfalls for all management levels and staff
- Management, monitoring and auditing - bullet points on systems and documentation
- Annexes - technical information for specialists
The procedures are designed to cover those aspects of safety management which should operate throughout the organisation. It is recognised that individual components of NERC will have local differences in the type of work they do and specific issues on many areas of safety not covered in the Procedures. Local policies and procedures will extend the general Procedure into these specific issues and specialist areas.
Research centres are expected to operate to the standards of the Procedure as a minimum, are encouraged to develop local additions/modifications (which are then fed back into review of Procedures) and may set tighter local standards if they think that is appropriate.
In addition to Health and Safety policies, procedures and guidance there is also the NERC Insurance Handbook which gives comprehensive information regarding insurance cover both in the U.K. and overseas.

It should be noted that these procedures are live documents and are subject to change. It is advisable not to keep printed copies longer than four weeks.
