Our targets cover the following seven areas.
Business operation
Ensure that Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are implemented across NERC appropriate to locations, scale and nature of operations.
Capital investment, purchasing and supply
Introduce a Capital Appraisal Method that takes into account environmental factors when making decisions on major capital investments over £500K for new and upgraded infrastructure projects.
Establish a Green Fund with an annual budget to support environmental initiatives at Swindon Office, our majority owned research centres, aircraft, ships and field stations, both in UK and abroad.
Environmental assessment and reporting
Produce Environmental Cost Accounts and publish a summary in the NERC Annual Report. The accounts will be a key section of our annual NERC Green Report, which will set out our environmental targets for the forthcoming year, the measures we introduced and the initiatives we undertook in the past year and the cost and efficiency savings made.
Energy
Establish accurate total energy consumptions across NERC activities by December 2008. Using these accurate totals, establish definitive targets and objectives and implement.
Buildings, facilities and estates
Carry out Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) evaluations on all major, new or refurbishment building projects in the UK. All new build projects to achieve 'excellent' BREEAM ratings and all refurbishment projects 'very good' ratings, or such other ratings as are considered appropriate.
Travel
Establish a corporate travel plan for NERC and ensure travel policies are established within all NERC centres.
Continue to establish Access Grid, and desk-top, video-conferencing facilities at Swindon Office and all research centres to help reduce road mileage and travel costs.
Staff awareness and training
Develop a corporate environment communications strategy to raise staff awareness of NERC environmental initiatives by October 2008. Implement the communications strategy and measure success of operation of strategy by October 2009.
