Video conferencing
NERC has invested in video conferencing equipment across its centres during the last five years; this has recently been upgraded to high definition and is regularly used for meetings, some lasting up to seven hours.
In addition, each site has at least one system which supports the 'People & Content' service. This allows not just face to face meetings but also the connection of PCs for exchanging simultaneous computer-based information, which enables participants to share documents, presentations and spreadsheets, and also deliver interactive demonstrations and computer-based training.
NERC has also signed up to the JANET Videoconference Recording Service (JVCRS), which allows video conferences to be recorded and makes note taking easier. JANET has also introduced a 'desktop' video conference service, which integrates with room based services. This is showing real promise in the pilots we are running; it will also enable mobile- or home-workers with suitable equipment and broadband access to participate in video conferences as a 'guest'.
The use of video conferencing is increasing and this provides greater collaboration, increased productivity and better energy efficiency.
