Measuring heat loss at National Oceanography Centre
In 2010 The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton indirectly emitted over 1435.82 tonnes of CO2e through gas consumption. The vast majority of this consumption occurs in the winter months for heating the Centre.
Thermal surveys occur on an annual basis. The resulting images are used to identify potential heat losses and to measure the success of draft reduction projects. Some of the images from the last survey (Feb 2010) can be seen below.
Following the 2010 survey a complete programme of works was completed to replace and fix drafty windows. This will help lower emissions and help maintain a comfortable working environment during the colder winter months. NERC has now invested in its own thermal camera and thermography training which allows the sites to monitor the success of such initiatives.
