Measuring heat loss at National Oceanography Centre

In 2012, the National Oceanography Centre's Southampton site indirectly emitted over 1,240 tonnes of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) through gas consumption. The vast majority of this consumption occurs in the winter months from heating the centre.

NOCS - Thermal Image roof areas 1Thermal surveys occur on an annual basis. The resulting images are used to identify potential heat losses and to measure the success of draft reduction projects.

Following thermal surveys, a number of measures have been taken to reduce heat loss from the building. These have included a complete programme of works to replace and fix drafty windows and the upgrade of ceiling tiles on level 6 of the building. These actions have helped to lower emissions and maintain a comfortable working environment for staff during the colder winter months.

NERC has a thermal camera and staff trained in thermography, which allow sites to monitor the success of heat loss reduction initiatives.
