Managing NERC's performance

In setting out NERC's strategy, it was clear that we needed to monitor and manage how we are delivering the strategy and understand what difference it is making. In essence, it is about:

"Knowing how we are doing and improving what we do as a result."

As part of this, NERC introduced the Strategic Management Tool (SMT). The SMT combines how we deliver the NERC strategy with how we monitor and manage performance across all of NERC's activities. It enables NERC's decision-making and advisory bodies to identify the key pieces of information that, when considered together, give a picture of the organisation's overall performance against strategy. From this we can identify where we need to improve NERC's future performance and identify any changes that need to be made.

The purpose of the framework is to ensure that NERC knows:

  • what its objectives are;
  • what it has to do to meet those objectives;
  • what its progress is towards those objectives and how to measure that progress; and
  • what its achievements and issues are - including how to measure and remedy them.

The information from the SMT is used to fulfil NERC's external reporting requirements, including reporting progress on the NERC Delivery Plan and Scorecard for the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS), and the Economic Impact Annual report. This allows us to demonstrate that we have effectively and efficiently invested public funds that contribute to the UK economy, policy and society, and internationally.

The SMT also helps to identify where specific evidence is needed to inform decision-making. This evidence is usually delivered through NERC's evaluation activities.
