Opportunity to join the Innovation Advisory Board

Closing date: 4 January 2017

NERC is seeking to appoint four new members to the Innovation Advisory Board (IAB). The IAB membership covers a range of sectors and interests and for this current recruitment we would encourage applications from representatives with broad perspectives and experience of business, both from within companies and from central and local government.

NERC is the UK's leading funder of environmental science research, investing £330m each year in cutting-edge research, postgraduate training and innovation in universities and research centres. Our scientists study and monitor the physical, chemical and biological processes on which our planet and life itself depends - from pole to pole, from the deep Earth and oceans to the atmosphere and space. NERC is a non-departmental public body, receiving annual funding from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). It operates under Royal Charter.

The Innovation Advisory Board advises NERC on its strategy for strengthening the delivery of economic growth and other societal benefits (impact) from its research and innovation investments. It helps NERC find the most effective ways to engage stakeholders, translate research and support innovation. The IAB also monitors and evaluates the effectiveness and impacts of NERC innovation investments.

The IAB meets three times a year and supports NERC Council and the executive by providing non-executive strategic advice and advocacy on innovation and impact.

Appointments will commence in February 2017 for a period of two or three years with a possible one-year extension.

Members of NERC Boards may receive £170 daily attendance fees. Fees are not payable to members who are civil servants; employees of NERC; full-time employees of organisations whose funds are derived from Votes of Parliament (eg government departments, UK Atomic Energy Authority, British Broadcasting Corporation, and other research councils); or have received public sector exit fees.

NERC is committed to the principle of providing equal opportunities for all. We support diversity in our public appointments and strongly encourage applications from suitable candidates from all backgrounds.
