Strategic Management Tool

Progress in delivery of the NERC strategic objectives

The NERC Strategic Management Tool (SMT) enables NERC to monitor how we are doing in delivering the strategy and improve what we do as a result.

The SMT aims to:

  • Provide a single place to drive delivery of the NERC strategy.
  • Provide performance indicators that show how well NERC is doing in delivering the strategic objectives.
  • Help us to streamline the amount of performance information that is collected and reported.
  • Focus attention on key areas of concern to identify issues and achievement.
  • Improve evidence to aid strategic decision-making.
  • Encompass BIS reporting requirements for NERC.
  • Ensure evaluations contribute to performance management.

This simple diagram demonstrates how SMT fits into our strategy.Strategic management tool

The SMT consists of fifteen strategic objectives, which derive from the NERC strategy and encompass everything we do. The fifteen objectives are arranged in three perspectives:

  • Knowledge and Partnerships,
  • Research Outputs, and
  • Resource and Process Management.

Details of the fifteen objectives can be found here:

Each of the strategic objectives is owned by a NERC director and is underpinned by a host of other information, such as performance metrics, activities (including those from the NERC/BIS scorecard) and risks, that identify how we will deliver each objective and which enable us to monitor and manage progress.

The NERC Executive Board (NEB), the Science & Innovation Strategy Board (SISB) and NERC Council receive in-year reports on progress against all of the objectives.

NERC uses the SMT information for reporting progress and performance of our strategy to the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills. This includes external reporting requirements such as the Delivery Plan and Scorecard and the Impact Report.

NERC's evaluation programme is an important source of information on how we are delivering our strategy.
