Governing and managing investments

It is important that NERC has strong and consistent mechanisms for governing and managing its investments. The governing process ensures that there is:

  • clear accountability for performance against NERC's strategic objectives
  • a clear separation of management (board) and advisory (steering committee) functions.

The management board is accountable for the delivery of strategic investments - national capability and research programmes - and will report NERC's performance to the Director of Science Delivery.

Management of all NERC investments will be constituted in line with widely accepted project management standards (PRINCE2).

Key features

NERC has a framework policy which sets out the specific requirements for managing national capability and research programmes. This sits within the overarching NERC policy on programme management.

Research programmes – all template management agreements between NERC and suppliers from research and collaborative centres will be maintained in a directory. It will be up-to-date and will reflect NERC's framework policy.

National capability and responsive programmes - there will be a directory of other NERC policies and standards that must be applied to.

A process map and user guide is available to download.
This has more comprehensive information and is written for NERC's science community and staff.
