NERC Open Research Archive (NORA)

We have developed a repository for research outputs (such as electronic copies of published papers) to improve people's access to the science being delivered by our research centres. NERC's research repository, known as NORA, went live in spring 2007.

NERC has mandated that any published, peer-reviewed paper which has been supported by NERC funding since October 2006, is to be deposited in a repository (with acknowledgement of the relevant NERC grant or project). This is of course subject to publisher's agreements.

Staff at NERC centres (specifically BAS, BGS, CEH and NOC, but not NCAS or NCEO) are expected to deposit and archive material into NORA. NERC award holders in universities are expected in the first instance to deposit within the repository of their host institution (likewise NCAS and NCEO researchers), or failing that, in the OpenDepot.org facility run by Edina.

NORA has been adapted so that NERC centres (BAS, BGS, CEH and NOC) collect metadata on a range of outputs, outcomes and impacts beyond publications, such as datasets, intellectual property and impact summaries. Not only does this support research performance evaluation, but it also helps showcase to business and other potential collaborators the specialties of these centres and what impacts they achieve.
