Access to research outputs

NERC is committed to the principles articulated in the RCUK statement on access to research outputs and to ensuring that the ideas and knowledge derived from its research, survey and monitoring activities are made available as widely, rapidly and effectively as practicable.

To support access to environmental data the NERC Data Policy requires that award holders offer a copy of any dataset resulting from NERC-funded activities to its data centres. Our network of data centres support the long-term curation of NERC's environmental data holdings and provide access to these holdings.

In 2006 we published our position statement on access to research outputs. This focuses on improving access to published peer-reviewed papers supported by NERC-funding. NERC requires that, for new funding awards made after 1 October 2006, an electronic copy of any published peer-reviewed paper, supported in whole or in part by NERC-funding, is deposited at the earliest opportunity in an e-print repository.

RCUK published a revised policy on "Access to Research Outputs link to external site" in June 2012. This applies to all research papers based on work funded by Research Councils. The new policy comes into force from 1 April 2013, however researchers are strongly encouraged to publish their research papers in compliance with the policy as soon as possible.
